As with all art, the context of the artist’s life and the world they live in can transform the viewing experience. Rothko was a complex character and the consequence of a tumultuous historical time.
Highly secretive about his creative process and adamant that his work should be an immersive viewing experience, dimly lit without distraction, it goes without saying that photography cannot adequately convey the majesty and mystique of Rothko’s human size classic paintings.
