Harassment is something that someone endures and affects them on a personal level. It is often open to interpretation. Sometimes, interactions are considered office antics, jokes, and pranks. Some of these scenarios may constitute conduct that, in the eyes of the law, falls within the realm of harassment.

Because harassment is so personal and has room for interpretation, looking at examples can help identify harassment situations. Analyzing examples can help warn against sexual harassment in particular. Let’s look at some examples of physical harassment, quid pro quo sexual harassment, and verbal harassment.
One of the most obvious forms of harassment is physical harassment through the use of physical contact. In the scenario I'm about to describe to you, you will see how the intentions of the harasser don’t necessarily need to be bad for it to be considered harassment.
Kasie is a receptionist at a doctor’s office. Julia, one of the assistants, often asks Kasie about the upcoming appointments. Whenever Julia walks past the front desk, she takes Kasie’s hand to compliment her on her manicure designs. Kasie has explained to Julia several times that she doesn’t like people grabbing their hands or wrists. It makes her uncomfortable due to an unpleasant past relationship. Yet Julia does not listen and continues to do so.
Quid pro quo harassment is a situation where one person needs to perform a favor, among other things, in order to keep their job or get a promotion. Here is one such example:
Tim just got a job as a personal assistant to the managing director, Ollivia. As he completed his onboarding training, Olivia asked Tim out for a drink after work. Tim declines at first, but Olivia responds by telling him he will need to join her for dinner and drinks regularly if he ever wants to get promoted. Tim refused and informed HR the next day about the inappropriate request.
Harassment doesn’t have to involve physical contact. Words can also be used as a form of harassment in the workplace. Here is one such example…
Travis works at a lumber yard. Due to his religious beliefs, he is fasting during the day. As a result, he is more tired than usual. The other workers make degrading, offensive, and inappropriate comments about his performance. They also mock his religious convictions. Travis reports the harassment to the employer’s human resources department.
