A powerful storm swept through Elk Creek, Virginia on Saturday evening—right in the middle of the Youth Guitar Competition. The storm knocked out the sound system and brought torrential rain, but the young musicians stayed strong.

At the moment the skies opened up, Elliott King was on stage competing youth guitar, with Hollace Oakes backing him up on mandolin. Behind the stage, other youth musicians stood in line, gripping umbrellas sideways to shield their instruments from the driving wind and rain. As canopies blew over and water poured in, everyone hunkered down—determined to weather the storm together.

This video captures a few candid moments after the worst of the storm passed. With instruments soaked and sound equipment down, the kids found a way to make the best of it—goofing off, playing what they could, and sharing some laughs. Hollace had her mandolin (but not her fiddle), Tucker was without his guitar, Berkley had his guitar (not his banjo), and Elliott’s guitar case had been drenched where it lay on the ground.

Despite the chaos, the spirit of the Bluegrass Youth music community shined through. Sometimes the most memorable jams happen between the raindrops.
