Yeh Boxing Day Kya Hota Hai?
Despite the name, it has nothing to do with sports boxing.
The term comes from Victorian England, where domestic servants worked through Christmas Day, preparing and supporting their employers’ celebrations. They did not get Christmas off. The following day - Boxing Day - they were finally given a holiday to visit their families and friends. On that day, they received “Christmas boxes” from their employers, which often contained money, bonuses, and leftover food from the Christmas feast.
Over time, the meaning of Boxing Day has evolved. In the modern world, it is widely celebrated across Commonwealth countries such as New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. Today, Boxing Day is best known for shopping, major sales, and heavy retail discounts.
Many people wait all year for Boxing Day to make big purchases, as retailers offer some of their biggest deals of the year. It is officially observed as a public holiday, marking a shift from its historical roots to a day focused on leisure, shopping, and spending time off work.
