Through video performance and photography, Imperfectus focuses on a topic that both peaked my interest personally and had the option of being relatable to today's societal problems. Body image, shown in both its negative and positive perspectives throughout my work, is a psychological issue affecting many that I wanted to bring light to through artistic form. All the art which I have created recently has been focused around both having a message within it and making art that has meaning. My goal was not just to make art, but to show the power in which art has the capability of holding. Seen within my video and the photos around the gallery is the mental struggle of dealing with and pushing through a negative self-body image, whether alone or with the help of others, promoting love and empowerment of the human being.
Imperfectus shows seven people, including myself, working through the mental struggle that body image has thrown upon us in many different forms. By making this into art, I am essentially comparing people and the acts of removal of human vulnerability to an artistic form itself. As the negativity is shown visibly, it is also removed in tangible matters. To create this piece, I started simply by interviewing people asking a range of questions so that I could understand the concept of body image and its affects through the eyes of others. I then turned their responses into an artistic reality, making body image a tangible form. I used objects that I felt display body image or the ideas of it, and used them as tools of explanation.
The inspiration for this piece came from artists such as Marina Abramovic, Jackson Pollock and Yoko Ono. Abramovic, who was a performance artist, used her own life and the problems she faced as the drive to make her art both powerful and meaningful. Pollock had this sense that to make art, one must become a part of their art as it becomes a part of you, and I held strongly to that in my work. Psychologically, Yoko Ono’s “Cut Piece” displays both the act of removal and a sense of vulnerability seen through artistic methods, which pushed me in that direction as a display method. I considered the styles of these artists because they all put a part of themselves into what they do to create the most honest and raw work. Carrie Fisher once stated, “I don’t want life to imitate art. I want life to be art”, and that is what I have striven to do through this piece.
For the viewers, Imperfectus should be seen through open minded eyes. It is displayed to show insecurity and vulnerability through both human and abstract form, as well the removal of negativity. It is about showing love when we live in a world that sometimes shows a little too much hate. It is about loving yourself, or allowing someone else to help you love yourself. It is about letting go of fears and anything that holds someone back from being their real self. Imperfectus was created not just to be another art show displayed in another gallery, but to show a little bit of myself as the artist, what I care about in regards to my world, and how I can visualize that through my style of artwork.
