FISH LADDERS IN ONTARIO
Thornbury Fish Ladder in Thornbury
The fish ladder is located in Thornbury near the mouth of the Beaver River where fish migrate from Georgian Bay
From late August to late October, adult spawning Chinook Salmon begin showing up in the area rivers. In April Rainbow Trout also make their journey upstream.
The fish ladder is very open making this a great place to watch as fish jump up the ladder!
Mill Dam Fish Ladder in Owen Sound
The dam is a great place to watch as Rainbow Trout migrate in April and Chinook Salmon from September to October as the fish migrate from Georgian Bay to the Sydenham River
Fish Ladder in Bowmanville on Bowmanville Creek
The fish ladder is located at the Goodyear Dam on Bowmanville Creek, which is connected to Lake Ontario, in Bowmanville Ontario
The ladder was designed to accommodate a variety of fish species, including Chinook and Coho salmon, Brown and Rainbow trout. The ladder is also equipped with a fish viewing area, where visitors can observe the fish as they swim up the ladder.
Fish Ladder on the Don River in Toronto
Built on the Don River
Connected to Lake Ontario, so many salmon and trout species found in Lake Ontario is this fish ladder including Atlantic Salmon, Coho Salmon, Chinook Salmon and Brown Trout.
Fish Ladder on the Humber River at the Raymore Park Dam in Etobicoke
Built on the Humber River by a weir in Raymore Park
Can see Atlantic Salmon, Coho Salmon, Chinook Salmon and Brown Trout on their migration journeys
Fish Ladder in St. Mary's
The oldest fish ladder in Ontario! It was built in 1908!
Unlike the other fish ladders mentioned in this video, this fish ladder is not close to the great lakes and therefore does not help the migration of the salmonidae species in Ontario. Instead, this fish ladder improves the connectivity of the Thames River when the power mill dam in St. Mary’s was built since by 1908 there were fishery laws in Ontario forcing owners of new dams to add a fish ladder to preserve fish stocks
Fish species that use this ladder instead include Northern Pike, Yellow Perch, Smallmouth Bass, Pumpkinseed, and the Common carp
Not the best fish ladder to visit if you want to see massive migration of trout and salmon but still a great sight to behold!

TACKLESHARE PROGRAM
TackleShare is a program run by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) since 1998. With the help from Ontario Power Generation as our title sponsor, we are proud to deliver this important program that encourages fishing as a fun, family activity that can be done anywhere in Ontario.
Wherever you fish, remember to follow signs and “Stay Clear, Stay Safe” as water near dams and hydro stations can turn dangerous in a heartbeat.
