After killing Jack Lupino, Max meets Mona Sax, who reveals that Don Punchinello ordered Alex’s murder and framed Max for it. Though he agrees to work with her, Mona drugs Max, calling him a liability. Trapped in a nightmare reliving his family’s death, Max wakes up captured by Frankie “The Bat” Niagara. He escapes, fights his way out of Lupino’s hotel, kills Niagara, and steals a car only to realize he’s being followed by Vladimir Lem, who wants to make a deal.
