This video is about the purported treaties negotiated in 1835 by John Batman with Aboriginal people - the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation - for land in the area of Melbourne, Australia.
It discusses the history of the British settlement of Tasmania, which was then known as Van Diemen's Land, and why Batman and other graziers sought instead to claim land in what was then known as the 'Port Phillip District' of New South Wales for grazing purposes.
It notes the different perspectives about what rights the treaties granted, and considers why the Governor of New South Wales rejected their validity. It discusses the Proclamation that was made, declaring any such treaty as void, and that persons taking possession of such lands without the authority of the Government were trespassers. It notes the relationship between this outcome and the High Court's Mabo decision from 1992.
