Reading & Northern Railroad brought excursion trains back to Mahanoy City on September 9, 2023 as part of the Mahanoy City Day. These were the first excursion trains to run through the Mahanoy Tunnel since 1994.
RBMN ran three trains from Mahanoy City to Tamaqua and back, with departures at 11:00, 1:00, and 3:00. Ticket sales were strong with over 700 passengers enjoying these rides.
The Mahanoy Tunnel is the longest tunnel in RBMN territory measuring approximately 3,500 feet long. It was built between 1859 and 1862 to transport anthracite coal out of the area. While anthracite coal is still mined and shipped along this line, Mahanoy City has been without regular passenger train service since 1961.
I collaborated with Collin from @PANortheasternRailfan to film at as many locations as possible during our chase of the 1:00 train. Be sure to watch is video as well since there will be different angles than you will see here.
