What does an OT do?

The OT will assess your child's development in key areas.

Some OT domains:
Physical
Cognitve
Social & Emotional
Sensory
Vocational

Based on the assessment results, the OT will create an individualized treatment plan and goals for the child.

OT sessions can take place anywhere. At home, daycare, school, a hospital, a store or even the park.

What can an OT do for my autistic child?

Give the child the tools to be as independent as possible.

Some goals can be targeted in a group setting, like social skills or play skills.

While others should be targeted individually, like hygiene and toilet training.

How should you pay for #OT Services?

You can purchase OT services privately.

Some insurance plans cover OT services. Ask your plan administrator if yours does. Also, be sure to ask when the benefit year renews!

OHIP pays for some OT services in:
Hospitals and Rehab Centres
Family Health Teams
Assertive Community Treatment Teams
Community Health Centres
Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs)

If your child has autism, the Ontario Autism Program will cover some OT services.

What is Sensory Processing?

Sensory processing is our body's ability to understand the information it's getting from the environment.

An OT will help your child identify which strategies will help them get their sensory system working in top shape.
