Surveyor: At age 17, he was appointed the official surveyor for Culpeper County, a job that gave him adventure, income, and a strong belief in westward expansion.
French and Indian War: In 1754, he joined the Virginia Regiment to fight in the French and Indian War, where he gained valuable military experience and command of troops.
French envoy: In 1753, Virginia's Governor Dinwiddie sent him on a mission to the French in the Ohio Valley to deliver a message demanding they leave the area.
Personal life
Mount Vernon: After his half-brother Lawrence died, George inherited the Mount Vernon estate, where he became a wealthy planter and managed the plantation using enslaved labor.
Marriage: In 1759, he married Martha Dandridge Custis, a wealthy widow with two children. The couple did not have any children of their own.
