Esther Nasser is originally from South Sudan and her fabric is a dress with African print that her husband bought for her after they fled to Congo due to war. Esther is one of 164 women from minority communities across Ireland who shared personal stories of the textiles that resonate with them. These stories will form part of a nationwide exhibition in 2025 curated by artist, Lorna Donlon.
Research should be shaped by the many diverse voices in Ireland today. ‘Cut from the Same Cloth’ [https://cutfromthesamecloth.org/] is a public engagement project led by UCD Conway Institute, University College Dublin that is building connections with women and girls from minority communities in Ireland. It is important to build trust and new connections so that diverse voices are heard and represented in the channels that inform our research.
The project is attempting to find common ground in an equitable, open and transparent way through community-based workshops involving textiles. Textiles trace the shapes of individual lives. They invoke memories, embody emotion, create connections and provide a sense of continuity. Each textile holds a story.
Lorna Donlon is a textile artist and tapestry weaver who is passionate about how textiles connect us to place, our sense of self, and our past. She is keen to enable scientists to visually represent the microscopic patterns in their research.
