In an era defined by geopolitical uncertainty, rapid technological transformation, and the rise of new regional and global powers, the interplay among diplomacy, policy and international business has never been more consequential.
UCLA Anderson’s Center for Global Management invited Ambassador Frank Lavin — a diplomat, international business advisor, author and commentator whose career spans senior roles in both public service and global commerce — to a conversation with CGM faculty director Romain Wacziarg. Lavin’s insights offered a rare firsthand view into how governments and businesses navigate today’s fast-evolving global environment.
Lavin has served in several of the most influential positions in U.S. foreign policy and trade, including White House Political Director (1987–89), U.S. Ambassador to Singapore (2001–05) and Under Secretary for International Trade at the U.S. Department of Commerce (2005–07). Across the Reagan, George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush administrations, he played a role in shaping foreign affairs, trade policy and White House operations. In the private sector, he has held senior leadership roles in corporate banking and e-commerce in Hong Kong and Singapore, providing him deep insights into how global firms operate across regulatory environments and rapidly changing Asian markets.
Moderated by Professor Wacziarg, the discussion explored Lavin’s vantage point at the intersection of diplomacy and business. He reflected on the Middle East, U.S.-Asia relations, international business strategy and trade dynamics, and how leaders can steer organizations through global uncertainty.
