Wasini Island is often shown as a beautiful coastal destination, but there’s a deeper story that many people don’t talk about.
In this video, I visit Wasini Island off the coast of Mombasa, Kenya, where much of the population still lives in poverty, despite the stunning ocean views that surround the island. I learned that Arab settlers moved to the island during the late 1800s and early 1900s, and today Wasini remains a largely Arabic-speaking Swahili island community, shaped by that history.
The island has a unique culture, traditional village life, and limited access to modern resources — a sharp contrast to the natural beauty around it. While exploring the area by boat, we were also lucky enough to spot dolphins swimming freely in the surrounding waters, reminding us of how rich the marine life here truly is.
