Introduction of the instructor, course goals, and target audience. Overview of the emergence of bioinformatics, the impact of Big Data in life sciences, and the role of open-access biological databases.

12:00 Basic and essential abbreviations in bioinformatics + INSDC Explanation of key bioinformatics acronyms such as NCBI, EMBL-EBI, DDBJ, etc.
Introduction to the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration (INSDC) and its components.

28:00 Introduction to the Gene database in NCBI
Overview of the Gene database structure, how to navigate a Gene record, genome annotation basics, and understanding LOC identifiers.


35:00 How to query a database – basics of query writing in Gene Principles of querying biological databases using keywords, field tags, Boolean operators, and examples within NCBI’s Gene search.

47:00 Understanding records and PubMed/MEDLINE fields Introduction to what a biological record is, the structure of metadata in literature databases like PubMed, and how to extract relevant publication information.
