Описание: Is your loved one safe to be behind the wheel? It’s a tough question many families ask as their loved ones get older or recover from an injury. Health experts at Lee Memorial Health System say there’s a simple way to find out if it’s time to give up the keys.

According to Mark McKenzie, an occupational therapist on staff at Lee Memorial Health System, taking a medical driving test is a quick and efficient way to determine if someone is ready to be back behind the wheel. “We try to make them cover all the different areas of driving so that by the time they are done, and we say somebody is safe to drive, we are very confident that they are safe.”

The test is more extensive than what you would take at a DMV. “We bring you in and do a short intake of your history, we do a physical, which will include a range of motion measurements, strength measurements, we'll check balance, coordination, we'll do a vision test, we'll do road sign testing, and we’ll do cognitive testing.”

Then they put the person behind the wheel and put all of those skills to the final test.
“A lot of times when we take them out on the road and point out things they have problems with they’ll realize and say ‘oh you know, I think you might be right’” said McKenzie.
If you’re unsure about your condition McKenzie says it’s not a good idea to get back behind the wheel.
