Untold Truth of the Hussain Sagar Buddha Statue | హుస్సేన్ సాగర్ బుద్ధ విగ్రహం వెనుకున్న నిజమైన కథ | InduSharanFats | Telugu Facts
The Hussain Sagar Buddha Statue is not just a monument, but a timeless story of vision, struggle, tragedy, and triumph. In the early 1980s, N. T. Rama Rao (NTR), then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, was inspired after witnessing the Statue of Liberty in the United States. He dreamed of creating a similar iconic symbol for Hyderabad that would stand as a beacon of peace and cultural pride. His choice was none other than Lord Gautama Buddha – the epitome of peace, non-violence, and compassion.
The statue was envisioned as one of the world’s tallest monolithic Buddha statues, carved from a single rock weighing nearly 450 tons, sourced from a quarry near Nakkarekallu in Nalgonda district. Under the leadership of renowned sculptor Ganapathi Sthapathi, over 200 artisans and workers worked tirelessly for two years, carefully chiseling the stone inch by inch. Originally planned in a lotus posture, the design was later changed to a standing Buddha in Abhaya Mudra – a gesture symbolizing “Do not fear.”
By 1986, the colossal 58-feet, 350-ton statue was ready to be installed on the natural rocky island in the middle of Hussain Sagar, famously known as Gibraltar Rock. But tragedy struck during transportation – the barge carrying the statue lost balance, and the massive monolith sank into the lake. In this accident, 10 workers lost their lives, shocking the entire city of Hyderabad. Their sacrifice, however, did not go in vain. The government provided compensation and jobs to their families, and engineers worked tirelessly to retrieve the statue.
After years of effort, using advanced cranes and pontoons, the statue was finally lifted and successfully installed. On April 12, 1992, in the presence of nearly 50,000 people and Buddhist monks from across the country, the statue was inaugurated with grand celebrations. Though NTR’s original vision was to install 32 statues depicting Buddha’s life stages, due to technical and financial challenges, only this single statue was completed.
Today, the Buddha statue in the middle of Hussain Sagar is not only Hyderabad’s pride but also a symbol of peace and India’s Buddhist heritage. Illuminated beautifully at night, it attracts thousands of visitors every day. More than just a statue, it stands as a reminder of history, sacrifice, and the eternal message of peace.
