Finger millet has been proven to be the best alternative to maize, rice & wheat as the source of carbohydrates without spiking your blood sugar levels. It is also loaded with minerals like iron & zinc. Consuming finger millet can enable one avoid several lifestyle diseases.
Finger millet is a hardy cereal crop that can be grown in a variety of conditions, including dry and high-altitude areas.
Finger millet can be grown on a variety of soil types, but it prefers well-drained soils with a slightly acidic pH of between 5.5 and 6.5. It can tolerate low rainfall and drought conditions, but it does best with an annual rainfall of 600-1000mm.
The common finger millet varieties include; P224 (brown), Katmani (red), Kak-Wimbi, Maridadi, Nakuru FM-1, and U-15 and Okhale-1. U-15 & Okhale-1 are new finger millet of superior quality, high yielding, tolerant to drought, striga weed & blast disease.
Finger millet seed rate is around 2-3 kgs per acre. Seed should be sown in rows at a depth of 1-2 cm. If seeds are buried too deep in the soil, they won’t germinate. The recommended inter-row spacing in 30cm
