In this episode we discuss Michel Debost's "three little devils." We also talk about other, related aspects of finger technique. Many of the ideas presented can be found in Debost's book, The Simple Flute (Une simple flûte).
Every 20th century flute student wanted to study at the Paris Conservatory. But realizing this was totally impractical, April Clayton chose the practical closest equivalent, and became a student of Michel Debost at Oberlin Conservatory in the 1990s.
Michel Debost is one of the best-known flutists of the French school. He was Principal Flute in the Orchestre de Paris for 30 years. He replaced Jean-Pierre Rampal as Professor of Flute at the Paris Conservatory. M. Debost moved to the USA with his American wife, flutist Kathleen Chastain, and subsequently taught at Oberlin Conservatory 1989-2011.
