Pelosi to Visit Taiwan as China Threatens Military Action

Описание: China on Tuesday warned the US that it would "pay the price for undermining China's sovereignty and security interest" amid mounting tensions between the two sides triggered by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's rumoured visit to Taiwan that China claims as its own.

While there have been no official announcements, local media in Taiwan reported that Pelosi will arrive Tuesday night, making her the highest-ranking elected US official to visit in more than 25 years.

Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said "we are closely following Pelosi's itinerary. If the US is bent on going its own way, China will take resolute and strong measures to safeguard China's sovereignty and security interests."

Hua said Beijing has made clear its position to the US and the two sides were in "close communication at all levels and through all channels."

"We hope US officials will clearly understand the importance and sensitivity of the issue and how dangerous it would be if the visit actually happens," Hua said.

China claims Taiwan as part of its own territory, to be annexed by force if necessary, and views any visits by foreign government officials as recognition of the island's sovereignty.
