Israeli president Ezer Weizman and his wife Reuma have arrived in London for a state visit and a royal welcome.

Weizman is the first Israeli president to make a state visit to Britain.

The Israeli president was driven in style to Buckingham palace in a carriage pulled by six horses.

He was given a warm welcome as he arrived Tuesday with his London-born wife Reuma.

The Israeli national anthem was playing as their carriage - the Irish State Coach - pulled up at the palace.

The Weizman's had arrived by car from Victoria Station, after a trip in the Royal Train from Gatwick, where the Duke of York had met the Presidential aircraft.

After lunch at the Palace, the president and Mrs Weizman visited Westminster Abbey to lay a wreath on the Grave of the Unknown Warrior.

President Weizman was born in Israel but volunteered for the R-A-F during the Second World War, serving as a fighter pilot in Egypt and India.

On a political note, Foreign Office officials praised Weizman's commitment to the Middle East peace process.

A state banquet will be held at Buckingham Palace Tuesday night in their honour.

But first the Weizmans met leaders of Britain's Jewish community at the palace.

The group of more than twenty included Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks and Eldred Tabachnik, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews.
