Lazanias - Λαζανιάς
The village of Lazanias is located about 30 kilometers Southwest from Nicosia - the capital of Cyprus - on the mountain range of Troodos, less than 2 kilometers North West from the famous Machaira Monastery.
The history and the name of the village of Lazanias is intertwined with the foundation of the Monastery (1160). In the past in the wider area there were many smaller settlements with their inhabitants living in clans. After the initiative of the monks of the Monastery, finally all the settlements were united and the present village was created. Along the way, the village, along with others in the area, were given as shares to the Komnenian dynasty. With the implementation of the feudal system by the Lusignan conquerors (1192 – 1489), privileges and shares of the Monastery were abolished and the settlement was given as a fief to one of the Lusignans. Then the residents of Pitsilia revolted, as a result of which "the Lasaniades (that is, the Lusignians) took over the place", hence the current name of the village.
Today, a walk in the village of Lazanias takes the traveler back to the 1900s, when brick-built houses with tiled roofs rose from the cobbled streets, since most of the houses in the settlement, although restored, retain these characteristics. The jewel and main attraction of the village is the church of Agios Georgios with its very special bell tower, while inside it has three jars (buried in the ground), for the best acoustics during the service.
