ay dio miooooo! with only 24 hours notice, my homie and international headliner, Marcello Hernandez, pushed me to perform for my first time in Spanish on a REAL SHOW Sold Out at a prestigious New York City venue. 🙌 and I'm so grateful he did!!!! THANK YOU, FRACOS!!!!! i told him in person but damn, i'm so happy i finally really tried it because i've turned down so many people for YEARS because i was afraid to get up there in full Spanish language. ive had friends try to get me on their Latin shows years ago!! but whateverrrrr, that's in the past now.
Some assumed I had been performing stand up in Spanish for years but number one: I was born and raised in America speaking English at home. My parents are now divorced but my mom and her parents were all born in Brooklyn, (part Greek and West Asian on her side) whereas my father was born in Colombia. Unfortunately for me, he was too busy learning English to teach us Spanish! 🤣 He only spoke "Colombian" to his family, his friends or whenever he was angry. 😅 Number two: ive never actually felt comfortable enough to joke around ONLY in Spanish onstage with a full written routine plus i've been mentally hustling the American market this whole time. (btw, funnier updated English clips coming soon)
So I practiced all night and all the next day writing a short routine while also translating some of my English material to form six minutes that i based off the feedback of two people, lol and what worked in the restaurant kitchens, lmaoooo.
But wow, when i got on that GOTHAM COMEDY CLUB stage, I felt ALIVE. I was nervous but so excited... I had so much fun!!! I’m now willing to do any Latin or Spanish themed shows! Please book me, people!!! Small show… big show… TV show? i am downnnnnnnn 😍
And I cant wait to perform again because in this set, i said "UMM" two times very awkwardly (which the editor suggested i remove so you might notice a slight jump) because i needed a second to regroup my thoughts and bits (in a second language i'm not 100% fluent in) but come on, first time on a true show. no major practice. never even did a Latin open mic, so I’m just excited to see how my material grows after the 100th time trying stand up en Espanol. I’m very new but i'm not new to the stage, i've been performing in English a lot especially the past 6 years since I independently landed on MAXHBO. Before that, it was more of a fun side hobby that I enjoyed but it was too infrequent to truly improve as a performer who's finding “his (or their) voice.” I was also pretty distracted co-running my restaurant and partying way too much instead of getting onstage. I rarely even drink now, jajaja. solo la mota, a veces y los hongitos loquitos
I am so grateful to have a humble homie, an incredible talent, who did not have to ever invite me again after I "chicken’ed out" (arroz SIN pollo) but he did and I did my best to deliver. I was so nervous beforehand pondering if i’d bomb or maybe just somehow not connect or even worse: I completely CHOKE and can’t speak at all. DIO MIOOOOO! but i couldnt let him down plus i have enough experience now where i should, in fact, feel confident. so i just got silly AFFFFF but my set will grow and layers will form. My next sets will be just as goofy but with some more depth but for now, I'm just getting comfortable by pretending that im joking around with the restaurant cooks.
Thinking of it, i’ve even had other friends pushing me to try this before Marcello did and I just never took the full plunge but whateverrrrr, no point in looking back anymore... I am now “Señor Alexis Carabaño: comediante a su servicio!”
CONTRÁTAME!!!
(Book me!!!)
graciassssssssss
💛💙❤️
