Working a stitch through the back loop when knitting or purling changes the look of the stitch that you are working into more than the new stitch which you are forming.
So people do this accidentally and then have a twisted stitch in their.
It can however be used to your advantage. Twisted stitches can be used on purpose to add texture. When you are working as a combination knitter you will be working into the back loop of any purl stitches that are made, unless you want all of those stitches to be twisted.
Another trick is so that you can multiple increases next to each other if needed, even when using a yarn and then making that yarn over disappear on the next row/round, but still having the extra stitch that it made.
