In this video, Richard Dempsey presents an outstanding gem quality, truly optic quality citrine crystal Paleo Story Stone face and mammoth effigy from Brazil, South America. This specimen was found together with another previously featured citrine effigy in an alluvial deposit in Brazil and represents some of the finest workmanship observed on citrine crystal to date.
Richard explains that this artifact displays exceptional Paleolithic craftsmanship, including advanced flaking, heavy engraving, grooving, and deliberate perimeter shaping. The effigy contains multiple layers of imagery, including a baby mammoth with a short trunk, mature mammoths with sweeping trunks, and multiple human faces representing young and old individuals. The faces are distinguished by stepped eyes, pointed and drooping noses, open mouths, and elaborate engraved hair bands created entirely through hand carved engraving rather than natural stone features or flaking ripples.
The engraving techniques shown on this piece were first recognized by Richard during his discovery of Paleo Story Stone face and mammoth effigies in October of 2020. These patterned engraving lines are now known to occur routinely on Paleolithic Story Stones made from citrine crystal, rose quartz crystal, obsidian, volcanic glass, and meteorites. Under magnification, the grooves are clearly visible as individual hand cut lines combined to form larger engraved features such as hair and facial details.
The artifact also shows extensive Paleolithic flaking around the entire perimeter, followed by edge grinding to remove sharpness. This grinding technique is consistent with Clovis era stone workmanship, leading Richard to believe this citrine effigy is likely Clovis in age. Heavy patination has seeped into the carved features over thousands of years, further confirming its antiquity and long burial history.
This video offers a detailed look at the advanced stone working abilities of Paleoindian ancestors and demonstrates how some of the hardest and most beautiful natural materials on Earth were transformed into symbolic expressions of mammoths, human identity, and cultural memory.
