Limestone kilns were once an important part of industrial and economic prosperity in the Lancaster County region. I videoed the some remnants of the this late 1800s limestone quarry and kiln. When limestone ore was heated to a temperature surpassing 1600 degrees Fahrenheit, the chemical process would take place and turn the stone into lime, or "quicklime" as some called it. The quicklime was mostly used as fertilizer to help lower the acidity of the soil across the local farm lands. Attached is a link to an interesting article regarding the historical preservation project that took place to preserve some of structures you see behind me. Thanks for watching. And remember, we are, alive in history. Take care.
