There’s a unique variety of mango in India that’s sold not by weight, but by dozens!

It’s known as the King of Mangoes – Alphonso, or commonly called Hapus.
Interestingly, the Alphonso mango is named after a Portuguese general who helped establish Portuguese presence in India. His name was Afonso de Albuquerque. It’s believed that he planted the first Alphonso mango tree in Vengurla, Maharashtra.
The Portuguese wanted a mango variety that they could market in Europe as an exclusive Indian fruit – something sweet, smooth, and less fibrous to fetch higher prices.
So, they cross-bred South American mango varieties like the Brazilian mango with local Indian varieties — and that’s how the Alphonso mango was born!
