It seems that about every year when a new game releases we have to ask ourselves, how does GameFreak design their Pokemon such that they fulfill a role needed for the game to flourish without being so overwhelming and centralizing as to throw the whole thing on its head and enrage the player base enough to stop playing. Kinda like how Urshifu did, or the 2025 Season World Championship structure. In other words, how do we balance this fucking game? I want to take Amoongus as a case study and follow it through it’s VGC history to look for clues as to how GameFreak may be designing their competitive Pokemon.
