After starting out and getting saved from certain execution by a mysterious deity known as the One Who Waits, you must grow in power and strength by herding a horde of cult memb- I mean, friends who are eager to perform your every bidding and aid you in building the mutton-themed cult to rule them all. In between maintaining your cult by performing tasks such as farming, cleaning up shit, building, cleaning up shit, burying bodies, cleaning up shit, and cleaning up shit, you are able to set off on crusades through 4 distinct environments, each unlocked once your collection of cult-members reaches a certain size.
As you progress through every dungeon, you have to choose your pathway before you can reach the end. There are a variety of different nodes you can choose to progress through – your basic combat dungeons (a few of which are unskippable in each map), the chance to receive resources needed to bolster your cult back at home, a friendly NPC who can sell you various things or offer you a service of some kind, or the opportunity to get some of that precious healthbar back. Throughout your game, you’ll come across splendiferous swords and castigating curses, spells that can be recharged by killing enemies and hitting bosses. There is a decent range of weapon types, ranging from close up and personal daggers, to the balanced sword, to the hammer, a powerful bulwark of a weapon that can mulch small crowds of enemies at once. Each weapon is given a type and then a modifier, more of which can be unlocked. Modifiers can have a number of effects from spawning ghosts to healing the player.
Curses have even more variety, ranging from simple spells that can slow enemies down to a spiralling barrage of tentacular terror.
Another thing that I see quite a lot of people talk about is that there are only 4+ final bosses to tackle, and some NPC quests, but once you finish all of these the game ends up being quite a short experience. Being priced at $35AUD, this does raise some questions about the pricing versus playtime of the game. To start off this discussion, quantifying the value of a game by comparing it’s pricetag to its potential playtime is inherently unfair. Due to the way some games are designed, they will naturally produce a longer experience for the player. When game designers create a game they do so with the intent of making an enjoyable experience – not necessarily a longer one. The Cult of the Lamb devs have clearly opted for a shorter, faster experience versus a long one, and that’s okay. While on the shorter end of the scale, it is an evocative experience that’s been living in my head rent-free for the past while. So whether or not the game is ‘worth it,’ is up to you. If you want to enjoy an admittedly short, but addicting, artistic experience, then I say go for it. Of course, Massive Monster has said that the game will receive free content updates in the future, so it will of course be very interesting to see where things go from here.
