#2102 is back!
After a 7-month absence from the rails, Reading & Northern's premiere steam locomotive 2102 lead the first of three 2023 Iron Horse Rambles from Reading to Jim Thorpe and back.
2102 is a Reading T-1 class 4-8-4 "Northern." She was originally built in 1945 as an extensive rebuild of a 1921 2-8-0 "Consolidation." She originally hauled coal for the Reading Railroad and later lead the original Iron Horse Rambles up to 1991. Reading & Northern spent over $2.4 million and 6 years of hard work to get her back on the rails in 2022.
I rode this as a passenger in one of the standard coaches. Although it was my third ride behind 2102, it was my first Iron Horse Ramble. I was joined by my sister, Vivian, and my friend Nick from @NixCrossing.
Although 2102 put out a lot of smoke of her own, it paled by comparison to the atmospheric smoke you see shrouding the mountains and settling into the valleys. This was more of the Canadian wild fire smoke that has been making repeat visits to the northeastern United States this summer.
Part 3 of this 3-part series covers the ride from Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania back to Reading Outer Station. The train stopped once to drop off passengers in Port Clinton. Overall this was a 60 mile ride in each direction, taking nearly three hours to complete.
