Wireless connectivity took a huge leap forward in 2014 when Behind-The-Ear (BTE) style of hearing aids started using Bluetooth Low-Energy to connect to smart devices, to allow streaming directly from a smart device into hearing aids. This connectivity changed the way that individuals with hearing loss could communicate using multimedia devices including phones and tablets. This meant you could stream Music, Podcasts, YouTube videos, and Phone Calls directly into your hearing aids.

The ability to stream audio into both ears was a HUGE deal for individuals with hearing loss because it significantly increases speech understanding. Naturally, most hearing aid users went from not being able to use a phone at all, to being able to successfully communicate with just about anyone. This Hearing Aid Bluetooth Connectivity continued to progress and eventually allowed Hearing Aid Users to stream audio from an Android device, not just an Apple iPhone or iPad device, thanks to the development of the Phonak Audeo Marvel Receiver in Canal (RIC) hearing aid in late 2018.

The only problem was, this connectivity was only for Receiver in Canal style devices that sat behind your ear. That is, until now. Phonak has now developed their custom In-The-Ear (ITE) style called the Virto Marvel which includes the award winning Virto Marvel Black. These devices give you the ability to directly connect to Any Bluetooth Device and Roger iN wireless accessories.

It all starts with the SWORD 3.0 Chip inside the Virto Marvel Devices. This chip supports 5 different wireless protocols including Bluetooth Low Energy, Bluetooth Classic, Binaural VoiceStream Technology, AirStream Wireless, and Roger Wireless. All of these wireless protocols are great, but the Roger Direct Wireless feature is one that you should really know about. This allows you to directly connect to a Roger Microphone like the Roger Select iN, the Roger Pen iN, or Roger Tablemic 2 iN. These devices can provide up to 61% better speech understanding in a Group setting in Loud noise. In addition to the Roger iN devices, you can also use the simple Partner Mic for improved speech understanding with just one other individual.

Hearing aids have come a long way when it comes to connectivity. Not only does this wireless connectivity, but it allows you to stream audio from your favorite wireless devices directly into your hearing aids, significantly improving speech understanding. It can also improve how well you hear in background noise which is arguably the single most important capability that people are looking for in hearing aids.
