Kahlil Gibran (originally Gibran Khalil Gibran) was a Lebanese-American writer, poet, visual artist, and philosopher, born on January 6, 1883, in Bsharri, Mount Lebanon (then part of the Ottoman Empire, now Lebanon).
In 1895, Gibran emigrated with his mother and siblings to the United States, settling in Boston, Massachusetts. There, he attended school and was introduced to the world of literature and art. Later, he returned to Lebanon for a few years to study Arabic literature at Al-Hikma School in Beirut, before permanently moving back to the U.S.
Gibran became fluent in both Arabic and English, and he wrote works in both languages. His most famous work is "The Prophet" (1923), a collection of poetic essays covering topics such as love, marriage, work, and freedom. The book became a global bestseller and remains widely read today.
Apart from writing, Gibran was also a talented artist, producing hundreds of drawings, paintings, and sketches.
His writings are known for their mystical, philosophical, and inspirational tone, often blending elements of Christianity, Islam, and Sufism.
Kahlil Gibran died on April 10, 1931, in New York City, at the age of 48, from cirrhosis of the liver and tuberculosis.
After his death, his body was transported back to Lebanon, where he was buried in his hometown of Bsharri.
