I've traveled and vacationed in Cancun, Mexico several times over the years. Whether you're just starting or in the middle of it, Cancun is a top vacation destination, especially for travelers from the U.S. In this video, I’ll highlight some of the best excursions and unique experiences you won’t want to miss while visiting this tropical paradise. Watch to the end of the video to discover one bucket-list experience that many dream about. Over the years, I’ve visited Cancun multiple times, and it’s truly a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.
Before you start planning, it’s essential to know Cancun’s peak, shoulder, and slow seasons. This can impact not only the cost but also the events happening during your trip. The shoulder months—April, May, November, and early December—offer great prices, but if wildlife is on your radar, visit between May and October. During late May, sea turtles start nesting on the beaches, and you can even witness hatchings as late as December. During one September stay, my family and I discovered a nest of sea turtles that had hatched on the beach. They were confused about where to go, so we helped guide them to the ocean—a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
If you want to snorkel with sea turtles, I’ll leave a link in the description. And speaking of the ocean, Cancun is also an excellent place for scuba diving. If you're not certified, you can still dive! Companies like AquaWorld offer temporary scuba certifications, and the instructors are top-notch. Cancun’s most popular dive site is the Museo Subacuático de Arte, an underwater museum featuring stunning sculptures now covered in coral. On a calm day, the water’s visibility can reach over 15 feet, making it an incredible place to explore. Want to elevate your experience? Book a catamaran excursion that combines sailing, snorkeling, and a visit to Isla Mujeres—home to one of the world’s most beautiful beaches.
Another must-do excursion is a trip to Isla Contoy, a bird sanctuary and national park. Though the boat ride is long, the journey is scenic with music, drinks, and even sea turtle sightings. Once there, you can explore the island, enjoy a provided lunch, and snorkel in crystal-clear waters. We even spotted a stingray and a nurse shark near the shore!
For history buffs, the Yucatan Peninsula is rich with ancient ruins. While the famous Chichen Itza is a bit too far for a day trip from Cancun, consider visiting Ek' Balam, an ancient Mayan city. This full-day excursion includes a 2-hour car ride, and you can explore the ruins before zip-lining and swimming in a nearby cenote. Afterward, stop by the town of Valladolid for a delicious lunch. If you’re staying at the Westin Lagunamar Resort, check out the Yamil Lu'um ruins, which are right on the property.
For an unforgettable experience, swim with whale sharks during their short summer migration near Cancun. We traveled 28 miles offshore to swim alongside these gentle giants. The boat ride also offered views of dolphins and manta rays—an adventure I captured in a vlog you can check out on my channel.
Of course, Cancun isn’t all excursions—you’ll want some downtime to relax by the pool or beach. If you hit a rainy day, many hotels offer games or rentals or bring your own book or card game just in case. And if you’re looking to save on meals, consider stopping by a local grocery store. Many hotels offer small kitchens, perfect for making breakfast or lunch. For dining off-site, La Isla Cancun has waterfront restaurants where you can enjoy a meal with a view—just keep an eye out for the lagoon’s crocodiles!
