ERROR - The 'Comet', not the 'Charlotte Dundas'. Bowling is home to the western end of the Forth and Clyde Canal with the now closed Caledonian Railway and the active North British Railway. In 1896 the new line was built across the canal by the Caledonian and a hydraulic powered swing bridge was required that closed in 1960 with the line. In 1963 the Forth and Clyde Canal closed above Lock 38.
The Henry Bell Monument can be seen at Dunglass. He built the 'Comet' and ran regular paddle steamer services on the Clyde.
Much of the 1896 canal and railway works appear to be red sandstone but are really red rendered concrete. The 1790 canal entered the River Clyde by a now closed deep lock due to the river's tidal range. The present 1849 lock enters into the old Bowling Harbour that was once served by a network of NBR sidings and later served as the winter home to many of the Clyde's paddle steamers.
Lock 38 dates from 1896, as do the associated keeper's cottages when the CR owned the whole canal. Canal House has been restored and was the Customs and Excise base.
