Chapter 4 - 🔥 On the Brink
After its rediscovery in 1994, conservationists worked tirelessly to project Gilbert’s Potoroo. But in 2015 disaster struck: fire swept through Two Peoples Bay, destroying 90% of the last natural habitat of #GilbertsPotoroo leaving only a handful of survivors.
The potential loss of the only known population due to a catastrophic fire had been a major concern ever since the rediscovery, so insurance populations had been established by DBCA/Parks and Wildlife Service, Western Australia on Bald Island from 2005 & in a 380ha fenced enclosure at Waychinicup National Park from 2010.
This forethought & preparatory action saved the species from almost certain extinction & clearly demonstrate the value of good recovery planning &, more importantly, implementation (a recovery plan is only as good as the actions taken to implement it!!).
An additional insurance population was created by DBCA on Middle Island in 2018 with funding from the Australian Government through Gilbert's Potoroo Action Group.
