Blood Transfusions: What You Need to Know and Do (The Animated Series)
Episode 3 - Transfusion reactions
· Some risks of transfusion to manage
· Hemolytic transfusion reactions
· Other, less dangerous reactions
· Transfusion information to carry with you
Blood Transfusions: What You Need to Know and Do is a series of short, animated videos for individuals with sickle cell disease and their caregivers. It also could be informative for clinicians who are less familiar with the complications of concern for individuals with SCD who receive therapeutic blood transfusions. The 6-part series explains in plain language topics like acute and chronic transfusion; antigens and antibodies; hemolytic transfusion reactions; cross-matching, iron overload, and why it’s important to diversify the blood supply. A key take-away is a checklist of personal data that people with SCD who receive transfusions should track so they can work with their doctors to avoid complications.
The series reflects U.S. practice recommendations for transfusion in sickle cell disease as of November 2020. It was produced by the Georgia Health Policy Center and the Sickle Cell Community Consortium, in consultation with Dr. James Eckman (sickle cell disease specialist) and Dr. Cassandra Josephson (transfusion medicine specialist). A recorded webinar version of the same material is available through the Consortium’s Warrior University.
