Wandering Florida’s Space Coast from the St Johns River to the Atlantic Ocean
What if your garden is alive with native bees you Brevard County, also known as Florida’s Space Coast, has a landscape that was shaped by and still is dominated by water. The north flowing St Johns River borders the western side of the county, meandering back and forth from a riverine state to lakes and marshes, providing an incredible place for birds and wildlife. Comprised of the Mosquito Lagoon, the Indian River, and the Banana River, the remarkable Indian River Lagoon system occupies the center of the county. The Atlantic Ocean borders its far eastern side. This presentation will cover the major habitats of the Space Coast with a focus on their birds and wildlife. You will be surprised at the wondrous bounty we have in this.
About the speaker:
Laurilee’s earliest memories are of running wild and free on her grandfather’s fishing pier. As soon as she could hold one, a fishing pole was gifted and thus began a life-long love of fishing and the outdoors. She commercially fished the Indian River Lagoon as a teen and worked her way up to running commercial longline fishing boats in the South Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. Laurilee left the sea in 1987 to join her family at Titusville’s Dixie Crossroads Seafood Restaurant, where she is now co-owner. Founder of the acclaimed Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival, she has served on a variety of tourism, growth management, environmental, and fishery boards. No longer a hunter of fish, Laurilee now concentrates on the restoration of her beloved Indian River Lagoon.
