Battle of Belarus, 1707

Fought outside Minsk, this engagement pitted attacking forces against an Austrian defensive line supported by cavalry and a mortar unit. The battle unfolded on open terrain, favoring formation discipline and positional control over maneuver alone.

Pike formations were deployed forward to anchor the line and deny cavalry freedom of movement. Austrian cavalry attempted both frontal pressure and a flanking maneuver, but the flank was met by counter-cavalry, containing the threat and preventing exploitation. Repeated cavalry actions against the pikes collapsed on contact, losing cohesion and momentum.

An Austrian mortar unit attempted to disrupt formations early in the battle but was identified and destroyed, removing the enemy’s primary indirect fire capability. With artillery neutralized and cavalry contained, Austrian forces were unable to regain the initiative.
