Historically and culturally, the town is in the Condomois, a former constituency of the province of Gascony with the title of county.
It is known for its magnificent Collégiale St. Pierre, a 14th-century church with a cloister and a tower.
La Romieu is included in the list of the Most Beautiful Villages in France in 2019.
The name of this medieval complex, "l'Arroumîu", means "the pilgrim" (a "roumieu" originally designated a pilgrim for Rome, but the term applied to all pilgrims).
