The Common Milkweed Bug (Lygaeus kalmii) is often confused with its larger cousin, the Large Milkweed Bug (Oncopeltus fasciatus), but it's a different species with a slightly different impact.
Unlike large milkweed bugs, which primarily target seed pods, common milkweed bugs are generalists—they feed on leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds of milkweed and related plants. Though they rarely kill plants outright, they cause cosmetic damage, seed loss, and can create unsightly clusters on ornamentals and pollinator gardens.
In this video, a common milkweed bug was sprayed with Protection Plus and killed in 7 minutes. The longer timeline reflects its tougher exoskeleton and the importance of thorough spray contact for optimal results.
Protection Plus is a contact killer—it must make physical contact with the insect to be effective. It does not kill instantly. Kill time depends on:
1. The quality of spray coverage
2. The pest’s age and outer body thickness
Mode of Action:
Protection Plus breaks down the insect’s protective outer layer, leading to dehydration and suffocation. It contains no oil, leaves no residue, and is safe for use around pollinator-friendly plants like milkweed.
How to Tell the Difference:
Common Milkweed Bug: Smaller, black with a red X across the back, shorter body
Large Milkweed Bug: Longer, bright orange with large black bands, more robust shell
Where They’re Found:
Milkweed (common, swamp, butterfly weed)
Native pollinator plantings
Educational gardens and greenhouse displays
Occasionally found in seedling flats or conservatories
