The Indian government has reported at least 200 cases of Indian citizens being recruited by Russian militants to fight in Ukraine. Ukrainian army killed 26 out of 200 Indians who went to fight on the Russian side. Seven remain missing.The BBC reports this.

Negotiations are underway with Russia for the repatriation of approximately 50 more, and some have returned home on their own.

The Kremlin claims that the Russian army recruits only foreign "volunteers," but this is clearly a lie. Russian recruiting agents, as relatives of those missing in the war in Ukraine have claimed, target young men who are lured into the war with numerous promises.

In particular, they often promise legal employment with high wages, accommodation, and official documents. However, upon arrival, the Indians are forced to sign contracts in Russian and sent to the front. India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka have consistently urged their citizens not to fall for the false promises of Russian recruiters. After it became known that hundreds of citizens of these countries were fighting against Ukraine on the Russian side, this sparked a series of scandals.

It should be noted that, according to the Center for Political Studies, since 2022, Russia has recruited foreigners from 128 countries using fraudulent recruitment centers, private companies, and government channels through its diplomatic and cultural institutions.

"Moscow has built a transnational system for recruiting foreigners using deception and criminal schemes. Citizens from dozens of countries, from Asia to Africa, were recruited into the war against Ukraine. Many of them were killed or captured," the Center's report states.

The CPD analysts add that hundreds and thousands of citizens from various countries were deceived, coerced, or bribed into engaging in aggression.

Residents of Asian countries constitute far from the largest category of mercenaries. The largest number of mercenaries fighting for Russia come from North Korea and Central Asia. There are also many Africans of various nationalities.

There, too, a number of scandals have arisen on this matter, and the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on African countries to take decisive measures to stop Russian schemes that are luring young people across the continent to fight against Ukraine.
