Protests against ICE surge around the country after Minnesota shooting

Описание: Hundreds of people gathered for a vigil in Portland Saturday night to honor two people who were shot by federal agents in Portland, and a U.S. citizen killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis.
The event was organized by the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition (PIRC) along with a number of other advocacy groups, calling for justice for victims and survivors of ICE and border patrol violence.
"ICE has been appointed to now be judge, jury, and executioner," Rob Werner Jr. Co-Director of Together Lab said. "That is not how we keep our communities safe."
Saturday night's vigil started off with song, followed by a number of speakers, including Oregon Congresswoman Maxine Dexter and Oregon Senator Khanh Pham.
"I am tired of watching people get hurt while those in power evade accountability," Dexter said. "Let me be absolutely clear: Transparency is mandatory. Accountability is mandatory."
"My community, right now, is scared," Pham said. "We're feeling fearful, confused, they're frightened, and I wanted to come together with other people to realize our collective strength and get inspiration for our fight ahead."
Portland City Councilor Candace Avalos also spoke to the crowd, telling KATU it's part of her role to be standing in solidarity with Portlanders.
"I am part of this community," Avalos said. "I don't just speak for them, I speak with them, and it's important as an East Portland councilor, after everything we've been through in the last 48 hours, to be present, to offer my words, but also offer opportunity for action."
The shooting in Portland took place on Jan. 8 in the Hazelwood neighborhood and sparked outrage and calls for accountability.
