On Thursday, hundreds of protesters confronted police in riot gear outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Portland, Oregon after a U.S. Border Patrol agent shot two people. The Department of Homeland Security claimed the federal agent fired a “defensive shot” during a targeted stop of a suspected Venezuelan gang member who allegedly tried to run over agents.
Portland’s mayor Keith Wilson and Oregon’s governor Tina Kotek called for calm in a joint press conference Thursday evening. “Portland is not a training ground for militarized agents. When the administration talks about using full force. We are seeing what it means on our streets. The consequences are not abstract,” Wilson said.
“When a president endorses tearing families apart and attempts to govern through fear and hate rather than shared values, you foster an environment of lawlessness and recklessness,” Kotek said.
The incident and unrest come amid public outrage just one day after an ICE-related shooting killed a woman in Minnesota.
