Chess Openings: Learn to Play the Sicilian Najdorf like Garry Kasparov — Poisoned Pawn Variation

The Sicilian Najdorf has become one of the most popular variations in the Sicilian Defense. It offers a solid position with sound counterplay. It has been used by players such as Vladimir Kramnik, Veselin Topalov, Vassily Ivanchuk, Vasily Smyslov, Viswanathan Anand, Viktor Korchnoi, Judit Polgar, Bobby Fischer, Tigran Petrosian, Mikhail Tal, and yes, Garry Kasparov. It has also been utilized by modern players including Viswanathan Anand, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Wesley So, Magnus Carlsen, Ding Liren, Levon Aronian, Anish Giri, Alexander Grischuk, Peter Svidler, David Navara, Peter Leko, and many more. It has a proven track record throughout chess history, and has been a hard chess opening for white to counter.

This chess opening is well fit for the aggressive, attacking chess player. One cannot play the Sicilian Najdorf Defense without playing for the win. It's not an opening in which black can play quiet, positional chess while having any chance of surviving. It is an opening that requires a ton of opening theory, but can lead to amazing results. Garry Kasparov, in particular, used it nearly every tournament and match of his career, and was constantly finding success with it.

In this video, we take a look at the Poisoned Pawn Variation, arguably the most complex and exciting opening in all of chess. Garry Kasparov popularized the Poisoned Pawn Variation in the Sicilian Najdorf, and many grandmasters use the chess opening currently. Below are three tips for anyone playing the Poisoned Pawn Variation in their opening repertoire!

1. Memorization is vital! Yes, just like any opening, we want to understand the why behind the moves we are playing. However, the Poisoned Pawn Variation is such a chaotic variation in the Sicilian Najdorf, that memorization almost matters more. It starts with memorization, and from there one can begin to learn the chess strategy behind the positions being reached. Only play this chess opening if you have time for intense preparation. This chess opening will take months to truly master, and dozens of hours to memorize all the lines necessary.

2. Only play this if you are an aggressive, attacking chess player who loves complex chess. Kasparov had an intuition for complex, dynamic chess player like no other in the history of chess. This is what made Kasparov so successful in this chess opening. In addition, Kasparov was not afraid to think outside the box. Even with modern chess computer programs, I believe there is much to discover about the Poisoned Pawn Variation. If you find your style similar to Garry Kasparov, Mikhail Tal, or Veselin Topalov, this chess opening might be for you.

3. One must analyze the chess games from the best grandmasters to do it. Players include Veselin Topalov, Mikhail Tal, and Garry Kasparov. These chess grandmasters have popularized the Poisened Pawn Variation, and Sicilian Najdorf Defense as a whole. One can only improve at chess fast by analyzing their games and learning the chess strategy, chess moves, pawn structure, chess tips, chess tricks, chess traps, and chess ideas coming out of this opening repertoire for black. If one wants to win fast in this chess opening, analyzing the chess games of chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov is a great place to start.
