The European order established in Vienna in 1815 was crumbling with the arrival of new players on the stage. The Kingdom of Prussia, destined to become the founding pillar of Germany, was growing stronger by the day. From the ashes of the Holy Roman Empire, the German Confederation had arisen, destined to be one of the chief architects of a new Europe. And the rest is history..

We have explored the founding of the German Empire—a process that would shape world history so profoundly as to lay the groundwork for future events like the First and Second World Wars. Born out of the Kingdom of Prussia under the leadership of Otto von Bismarck, the German Empire underwent a difficult and determined process of construction.

From the 1860s onward, Bismarck pursued a policy of unifying the fragmented German states. Through his carefully crafted strategy of Realpolitik—a politics grounded in pragmatism rather than ideals—he succeeded in this long and arduous mission.

Appointed by Kaiser Wilhelm I in 1862, Otto von Bismarck first defeated Denmark, then stripped the Austrian Empire of its leadership over the German world. Finally, by defeating France both politically and militarily—the greatest obstacle to German unity—Bismarck crowned his efforts with triumph. Following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871, he proclaimed the German Empire and elevated the King of Prussia, Wilhelm, to the title of German Kaiser.
