On August 13th, 1944, General George Patton's Third Army stood 15 miles from closing the Falaise Pocket and trapping over 100,000 German soldiers—then General Omar Bradley ordered him to halt at Argentan and wait for Montgomery's forces to close the gap from the north.
Drawing on Patton's diary, Bradley's memoirs, and German post-war interrogations, this documentary examines how Bradley's halt order left the escape route open for eight days, allowing 20,000 to 50,000 German veterans to escape and regroup. Those survivors formed the core of SS panzer divisions that spearheaded the Battle of the Bulge four months later, resulting in 80,000 American casualties including 19,000 killed. The decision prioritized alliance politics and avoiding friendly fire over the opportunity to shorten the war—and American soldiers paid for that choice in the Ardennes snow.
