Behind the front lines of the First World War, narrow trenches became temporary homes for soldiers. These dark, damp, and muddy spaces were not only filled with the fear of enemy fire but also infested with large rats that thrived on food scraps and human corpses. The rats bit sleeping soldiers, destroyed supplies, and even gnawed on rifle stocks. They carried diseases such as lice and scabies, worsening the suffering of men already exhausted by war.
Some soldiers attempted to defend themselves by building makeshift shelters or hunting the rats. Dozens could be killed in a single night, yet the infestation was never truly defeated. For front-line troops, filth, disease, and vermin became part of everyday life in the trenches.
Yet all of this paled in comparison to the most terrifying moment of trench warfare: the order to “go over the top” to leave the safety of the trench and advance across No Man’s Land, into machine gun fire, barbed wire, and near certain death.
