The Fish Village has no connection to the ancient, historical Königsberg because it was built in our own time. The first phase of the project was completed in 2010. And only in 2022 did the final stage of construction give the complex its ultimate appearance.
The Fish Village is located on Oktyabrsky Island (historically known as Lomse Island), in the Moskovsky district of Kaliningrad on Oktyabrskaya Street. It is a thematic quarter created as a tourist zone.
When creating the "Fish Village," the architects took a creative approach to history. They borrowed the name from the actual Fish Market of Königsberg, which, however, was located in a completely different place—on the opposite bank of the Pregolya River. The actual past of this territory is that of firewood warehouses, which existed here from the fifteenth century onwards, and a bit later, the "Ox Market"—a cattle market that operated here until approximately the eighteenth century.
The Lower Pond was created in 1256 in the capital of East Prussia, the city of Königsberg. It was formed when the Teutonic Knights from the nearby Royal Castle of Königsberg dammed a tributary of the Pregolya River with an earthen embankment. The pond's water was used to fill the castle's moats. A water mill was also built on the pond, which is why it was originally called the Mill Pond. But it went down in history as the Castle Pond. It was also called the Royal Pond.
The Lower Pond, along with the Upper Pond, is the oldest man-made structure in Kaliningrad that has survived to this day.
Local residents call Amalienau the soul of old Königsberg.
Originally, the Amalienau district was a small village called Hinterhufen, which translates from German as "Hind Leg." Around 1820, a local political figure, Gustav Schnell, bought the lands around Hinterhufen and built a large estate, naming it Amalienau in honor of his wife Amalie Schnell.
In 1898, the architect Friedrich Heitmann, together with his partner Joseph Kretschmann, purchased this land for the construction of luxurious villas amidst nature. Their motto was: "Work in the city, live in the countryside!"
The district was conceived as a "garden city," featuring low-rise development with well-appointed villas, an abundance of trees, flowers, and shrubs, and numerous avenues, circular squares, and winding streets.
Each house and villa was built according to an individual design and, even at the beginning of the 20th century, had all modern conveniences: electricity, gas, running water, and sewerage.
During the war, Amalienau miraculously survived, preserving the appearance of a "garden city" and the ancient luxury of its architecture in its original form.
