The Taranaki Falls track is located in the Tongariro National Park near the centre of the North Island, New Zealand. The magnificent falls tumble twenty metres over the edge of a large lava flow which erupted from Ruapehu 15,000 years ago.
The track is a loop of around six kilometres and can be walked in either direction, taking around an hour each way. I walked the upper track first as this was completed in combination with the extraordinary Tama Lakes track. This is the direction the video is filmed.
On a clear day from the upper track you’ll see the symmetrical cone of Ngauruhoe (Mount Doom) and the older eroded mountains of Tongariro and Ruapehu. Here the track is exposed, crossing a series of eroded gullies formed by wind, rain and frost. The lower track is more sheltered on windy days, passing through tussock and alpine shrub lands before entering the beech forest and following and crossing the Wairere Stream.
Hi I’m Sharon Evans the Freewheeling Kiwi. Thanks for watching my video. My goal is to inspire and motivate other women and girls to spend time in nature, wherever that might be and at whatever level they are comfortable with. Please share my video with just one friend, so that they too will benefit from the healing properties of nature.
