Gran Anello Bellunese | A bikepacking Film with Igor

I leave from Igor’s place one evening, with that feeling you get before a real trip—when the adventure is already building inside you even before you pedal a single meter. I try his son’s new Husqvarna 300 2T and I get excited like a kid. Then dinner with his whole family, we load the bikes, and around ten we drive straight toward Feltre and the Belluno area, ready to start the Gran Anello Bellunese (GAB).

We wake up after just a few hours of sleep with that mix of fear and excitement that comes with every bikepacking trip. We pack the bags and start pedaling. The first kilometers flow easily in the valley, and then the climbs begin—steep, nasty ramps like the one to Castello di Zumele, and especially the endless ascent to Nevegal, under an African heat that drains everything out of you. After more than five hours we finally reach the top, grab a quick sandwich and keep going: the GAB begins for real. Singletrack, bits of portage, forests, a few shortcuts just to stay alive… until we finally reach Lago di Farra d’Alpago at sunset. Igor is destroyed but happy: 6 hours and 50 minutes on the bike, something he had never done before.

Day two starts with the climb that scares us the most: the long, steep ascent to the Cansiglio plateau. We stock up on food (16 euros for two bananas and two sandwiches—something Igor will never forget) and start grinding. Ramps above 15%, pure suffering, but little by little we climb while talking, distracting ourselves.
The Cansiglio forest in spring is an explosion of green: beech, spruce, larch, endless forest roads on the hillside and the old Cimbrian settlements scattered everywhere. For almost 40 km, nothing but woods, silence and history. We reach the San Martino checkpoint exhausted, climb a few more brutal ramps, and then a beautiful descent takes us to Pieve d’Alpago. We spend the night in a “1920s-style” hotel that Igor calls “the real adventure”.

Day three is softer: cycle path, small trails, a stop at Roby Bike for another GAB stamp, then toward Lake of Mis, which we find cloudy and far less stunning than I remembered. But that’s how mountains are: sometimes perfect, sometimes simply honest.
The last kilometers fly by until we reach the finish. Igor is emotional, almost in disbelief that we managed to complete the whole loop. We look at each other and realize how beautiful life is when you live adventures like this, pushed forward only by the strength of our three legs.

Parto una sera da casa di Igor, quella sensazione da viaggio che ti monta addosso già prima di partire. Provo la nuova Husqvarna 300 2T di suo figlio e mi emoziono come un bambino. Poi cena con la sua famiglia, carichiamo le bici e verso le dieci puntiamo dritti verso Feltre e tutta la zona del Bellunese, pronti a iniziare il Gran Anello Bellunese (GAB).

Ci svegliamo dopo poche ore di sonno: quel mix di paura ed eccitazione che accompagna ogni viaggio in bici. Prepariamo le borse e partiamo. I primi chilometri scorrono in valle, poi iniziano salite cattive come quella al castello di Zumelle e, soprattutto, l’infinita salita verso il Nevegal, sotto un caldo africano che ti svuota. Dopo più di cinque ore in sella arriviamo in cima, panino veloce e via: il GAB inizia per davvero. Single track, portage, boschi, un po’ di tagli per sopravvivere… e finalmente il lago di Farra d’Alpago al tramonto. Igor è distrutto ma felice: 6h50, mai fatte prima.

Il secondo giorno ci aspetta la salita che più ci spaventa: l’ascesa verso l’altopiano del Cansiglio, lunga e ripida. Ci carichiamo di cibo (16 euro per due banane e due panini, che Igor non dimenticherà mai) e iniziamo. Tratti oltre il 15%, sofferenza pura, ma arriviamo in cima parlando e distrandoci. La foresta del Cansiglio in primavera è un’esplosione di verde: faggi, abeti, larici, lunghi sterrati in mezza costa e antichi insediamenti cimbri. Per quasi 40 km solo bosco, silenzio e storia. Arriviamo esausti al checkpoint di San Martino, altre rampe assassine e poi una discesa bellissima fino a Pieve d’Alpago. Notte in un albergo “anni ’20”, che Igor considera “la vera avventura”.

Il terzo giorno è più morbido: ciclabile, sentieri, tappa da Roby Bike per un altro timbro del GAB, poi verso il lago del Mis che purtroppo troviamo torbido e meno spettacolare del solito. Ma va bene così: a volte la montagna è perfetta, altre volte semplicemente vera.
Gli ultimi chilometri scorrono veloci fino al punto di arrivo. Igor è emozionato e quasi incredulo di aver fatto tutto questo viaggio. Ci guardiamo e ci rendiamo conto di quanto sia bello vivere avventure così, spinte solo dalla forza delle nostre tre gambe.
